It's over, and we're suffering from the Jamboree Blues

A World Scout Jamboree is an intense experience - you will find that you're always busy, but we were lucky enough to be allowed free time as well. A large number of areas were set up to cater for this. One example being the Faith and Beliefs zone. One of the fundamentals of the Scouting Programme is the spiritual dimension, a place to explore different religious values and faiths.

What is a World Scout Jamboree?

Picture
Interested with knowing what we are getting ourselves in for? Well here is a simple definition.  Every four years, tens of thousands of Scouts and Explorers, from every corner of the world, gather in a tented city for two weeks of activities and adventure.

It is a fantastic event where up to 40'000 Scouts live and learn together. This is an amazing first hand experience of multiculturalism in action, a place to interact and participate with others from all over the world, building solidarity and understanding across cultural and geographical boundaries.

The Jamboree is aimed at 14 to 17 year olds, attending the event in National Groups, known as Contingents. There are 160 member countries in the World Organisation of the Scout Movement. All supported by thousands of international adult volunteers, and a special Scout solidarity fund helps to ensure the people can attend from as many Contingents as possible. It is a peace building exercise in an enormous scale - the World.
The Jamboree is a unique experience for participants, staff and even the visitors who come to visit the camp site in action.

Sweden

Picture
Apparently, there is a lot to see and do, before and after the Jamboree. Stokholm, the Capital, situated north of the campsite, is well known as the most beautiful capital city of the world. To the East and the West are the coastal areas, which are known to be a great visit also with many islands to sun bathe and bask. The Swedish landscape offers many naturistic oppurtunities for adventure. The forests, the mountains and the lakes are all wondrous. They are easily accessible thanks to the unique Right of Public Domain. This right is a part of a very old set of laws giving everyone the right to move about freely in woods and fields.
Perhaps you could visit the surrounding region of Skåne: Sandy beaches and big, beautiful national parks. Fields of yellow rapeseed and deep green forests. Peaceful country life and grand city vistas! Sweden also has a history with fine old traditions. You can still find traces of the Vikings who lived in Scandinavia a thousand years ago. Well-preserved rune stones and other relics can be found in many places, telling us about the life of these world renowned seafarers.

The Site

Picture
The site is a military base, where the military obviously will not be there, because we will be occupying the sandy area (apparently it is sandy...) The nearest town is Rinkaby and the nearest city is Kristianstad. The theme being "Simply Scouting" we would best be prepared knowing our knots. It's going to be much bigger than the olympics, one because of how many people participating, and also because of the number of countries working together.

Future

Ho - Ho -- the international experience to stay with a hosting family for 3-4 days.
This year, for the UK, it's in Poland!
